Walter Massa's 2018 Derthona is rich, dense, and warm but also wiry and tense, with an energy and vitality.

The Derthona is made from the Timorasso grape, a rare and ancient indigenous Piedmontese variety, which has been saved from extinction by the gregarious and outspoken winemaker Walter Massa, who recognised Timorasso's affinity with his terroir. Walter had a serious car accident recently and for many months moved around the cellar in a wheelchair barking out orders to his team, but we are delighted to hear that he is now back on his own two feet and the wines are even better than ever!

Timorasso produces tiny yields of immensely concentrated fruit and, in the past, was overlooked in favour of high-volume producing varieties, until Walter took over his family's farm on the steep hills east of Tortona and produced 500 bottles from a tiny 5-hectare plot. His holding has now risen to 20 hectares (very little is grown elsewhere), and so this is a great opportunity to taste a wonderfully unique full-bodied white wine style with good acidity that shows plenty of fruit character and a mineral backbone. Enjoy with charcuterie, fish, seafood risotto and Asian dishes.

Refined nose with tropical fruits and citrus notes and a hint of hawthorn which flow into a wonderfully rich, complex, aromatic mouth, with underlying minerality and vibrant acidity keeping it fresh and lively.

" man kept the timorasso flame burning - Walter Massa. For years he was broke, with a cellar full of an obscure wine no one wanted to buy, but it is now in high demand. As befits someone who refuses to accept the vagaries of fashion, tasting with him is an experience: his assistant apparently never wears shoes, and the higgledy-piggledy winery would give a health-and-safety officer nightmares. Yet, out of seeming chaos comes exquisite wine: tasting through the range makes it easy to see why the grape is unique and you should take part in its revival by drinking some." Hamish Anderson, Daily Telegraph

"Walter Massa is pretty much the saviour of the variety that was once the prime grape in Gavi..." Jancis Robinson MW
