White Burgundy, 2010

2010 was a good year for white Burgundy – a classic ‘cool climate’ vintage that produced a small crop of well-balanced, light whites with good acidity, nice fruit weight and freshness.

Yields were down by as much as 50% caused by a very cold winter snap on the 21st December which killed off the chances of many vines (before they had become dormant) and the summer growing season was quite unexceptional with much of July and August being drab. However, a cool dry September meant a long hang time during which the small berries ripened perfectly – resulting in a small crop of petite, healthy, concentrated berries.

However, as with red Burgundy, maturity was not universal and there is inconsistency across producers (with problems such as high acidity), and so knowing where to buy is key. Puligny-Montrachet was the pick of the crop.
