Tuscany, 2010

The 2010 Tuscan vintage was average, being dominated by the weather, which challenged growers to the maximum. The best wines show finesse and elegance rather than ripeness and power, and those growers who practiced careful vineyard management, strict selection and patience, coupled with great terroirs, produced some great wines. Elsewhere the results were very patchy.

A wet spring from April to June delayed budding and flowering, but a hot, dry July got things moving in the vineyard to an extent, only for showers to reconvene from the end of August and throughout September. Achieving healthy, ripe grapes was a real challenge (especially for the thin skinned Sangiovese), but those who did mange this were successful. Late harvesting (in October) was essential to achieve ripeness, and knowing your producers is key in such a variable year.
