Saint-Émilion & Pomerol, 2014

The 2014 Bordeaux vintage produced classically styled reds with the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wines of the Left Bank fairing better than the Right Bank. There were some very good wines made on the Right, but overall not in the same league as the flatter side of the Gironde.

The Bordeaux winter was very mild but wet and spring passed by without a late frost and the summer began well until a cold August meant that fruit struggled to ripen. An Indian summer saved the vintage, with the warmest September since the 1920s, which enabled perfect ripening, and the harvest took place in October in perfect conditions. Yields returned to average for most, which brought relief from a smaller 2013 crop.
