Rhône Valley, 2016

2016 was a good vintage in the northern Rhône, and a great year for the Southern Rhône – a reversal in fortunes between the flatter south and the hillier north (which suffered some hail) from the previous vintage. In fact, it was one of the best vintages in decades for the south – generally producing more elegant, fresher wines than the richer, sometimes overly powerful 2015s. A more classic Rhône vintage, which was equally good for reds and whites.

The growing season didn’t get off to the best of starts, with a damp, cold spring, but a hot, dry summer followed, with sufficient rain and cool nights bringing relief to the vines.
