Rhône Valley, 2014

2014 was an average Rhône Valley vintage (and a winemaker’s vintage), which produced relatively copious quantities of soft, medium-bodied, early-drinking, aromatic reds.

The vintage was dictated by several factors; a cool, wet summer, which caused extensive mildew, coupled with an invasion of a pest (the cherry vinegar fly), which ate its way through grape skins and laid its eggs. Vineyard workers earned their crusts, thinning leaves and sorting vines time after time, reducing yields and grape sorting at harvest, and those who picked later fared better, benefitting from early September sunshine.

Rhône whites fared much better than the reds, as the pest is not interested in pale skin grapes, and show good ripeness and acidity.
