Rhône Valley, 2013

2013 was an excellent year in the Northern Rhône, while quality was variable in the South; low quantities being the common denominator.

The growing season was difficult, and plenty of work was required in the vineyards. A cold spring delaying flowering and the eventual harvest, there was high humidity and hail, and vignerons worked hard to prevent botrytis and mildew. But a warm summer turned things around in the north, producing healthy, ripe grapes in time for picking.

The southern Rhone experienced greater difficulties with coulure (flower abortion) a major factor in a cold, wet spring. July was unseasonally hot and August unusually cool. The harvest would be late, but the vignerons were forced to pick earlier than they would have liked as rains were forecast. Yet, despite the problems the southern region produced some really good wines.
