Rhône Valley, 2003

2003 was a very good Rhône vintage despite the savage heat, as vines were able to draw from the high water table created by the previous year’s rains. Old vines with deeper root systems fared particularly well. Many growers picked as early as August, as many grapes were already sufficiently ripe.

The best wines are incredibly rich, ripe and concentrated and surprisingly well balanced given the extreme heat, and it was a particularly good year for the southern Rhône.

"...a Port-like headiness, then pumps out dark berry fruit, bramble, licorice, tar and pain d'épices flavors before a flitter of game and garrigue on the finish. Dense and muscular, but also luxurious." Wine Spectator
