Rhône Valley, 1999

1999 was a very good Rhône vintage, although often overlooked in favour of the great 1998 and 2000 vintages. A warm, dry summer saw good ripening conditions, although high rainfall in certain areas caused some rot.

The majority of the north produced well-balanced reds and the Côte Rôtie was the stand out appellation with a wealth of fleshy, concentrated wines. Hermitage was also excellent – ripe and voluptuous with great structure.

Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe, Gigondas, and the Côtes du Rhône Villages excelled in the south – accounting for a plethora of elegant, balanced wines.
