Red Burgundy, 2016

2016 is something of a miraculous red Burgundy vintage, following the worst frost (in late April) seen for over three decades, which wiped out entire plots in the Côte d’Or, but remarkably left other vineyards virtually untouched. The frost was followed by an unseasonally wet May and June causing mildew to reduce the crop further still – leading to miniscule yields for many.

However, from mid-June onwards, the region basked in prolonged periods of warm, dry spells, with sufficient rain in late August to bring much needed relief to the vines. The grapes that survived were ripe and healthy, with the resulting wines boasting both freshness and intensity of fruit.
