Red Burgundy, 2013
2013 was a difficult red Burgundy vintage, but some really good wines were made despite the adverse weather, particularly by the premier and grand crus who picked later, and produced wines redolent of their terroirs. The best wines were aromatic with good balance. Grower knowledge is key though.
Following a poor start to early spring, the weather stayed cool and damp until May, when heavy flooding struck, low temperatures and snow! Flowering didn’t take place until the back-end of June. July was hot and dry, but then a devastating hailstorm caused damage in Beaune. Fortunately, August saw stable, warm conditions, which continued into September.
