Red Burgundy, 2003

2003 was an irregular Burgundy vintage, with wines ranging from average to very good. Burgundy, like the rest of Europe experienced a heatwave causing much damage and reducing yields by around a third on average.

Picking was exceptionally early, and some harvesting actually took place in August before the sugar levels got too far out of control, but that meant less tannin and structure.

Old vines fared the best, their roots reaching deeper to grab what little moisture was available. Red Burgundy fared better than white and there were some very good wines made, while the whites were more average in general.
