Piedmont, 2009

2009 was an excellent year in Piedmont, a traditional vintage with a great crop of very well balanced, healthy grapes producing balanced wines of fresh acidity, good fruit and ripe tannins.

The 2009 growing season saw scorching temperatures in July, August and September, but good annual water reserves (with high snowfall in winter and rainfall in spring) proved sufficient to prevent drought and overripe grapes. Winemakers had to work hard in the vineyard to protect the grapes from too much exposure to the sun, and foliage cover was of paramount importance.

Both Dolcetto and Barbera had much better years than 2008, and generally showed great balance, structure and finesse. Barolo and Barbaresco also had great years, with Barolo just shading it.
