Piedmont, 2008

The 2008 Piedmont vintage was saved by an Indian summer. It was a low yielding harvest of concentrated fruit with some elegance, with the later ripening varietals of Nebbiolo and Barbera being the stars of the vintage.

Spring was cool and stormy and July pretty dreary, with growers having to thin their crop and deal with mildew and rot. Thankfully, August was warm and dry and the early-ripening varieties, like Dolcetto, were picked in early September (missing out on the latter fine ripening weather), while warm days and cool nights saw Nebbiolo and Barbera reach optimum ripeness by early to mid-October.

Nebbiolo produced the richest, ripest fruit of 2008 and Barbera was full-flavoured and elegant. Barolo was also good, though lacking some power, boasts good acidity and nice soft tannins.
