Piedmont, 1989

1989 was a great Piedmont vintage across all appellations with the exception of Barolo.

It was also remarkable for the fact that Piedmont missed the rains that marred much of Italy. Despite an unsettled spring and early summer, warm weather predominated, although Barolo suffered from hail damage.

Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo were picked in perfect health across all appellations (Barolo was patchy), producing big, powerful wines with lusciously ripe fruit and firm structure to warrant lengthy ageing.
