Médoc and Graves, 2015

2015 was an excellent Bordeaux vintage and the best since the excellent 2010 vintage, but it is a variable vintage between appellations and producers, with some great, very good and quite poor wines due to the erratic weather. Careful selection is key.

A really hot early summer was brought to a halt by a cooler, wet end to the growing season, and so vineyard management was tantamount to success. Those that succeeded made wines of purity, precision, elegance and freshness, with concentrated fruit and stunning balance. Those that were less successful made big fruit bombs with high acidity.

On the Left Bank, Margaux was the pick of the appellations, with great consistency across the board, while Saint-Estèphe, Graves and Pessac-Léognan also performed well generally. In Paulliac and Saint-Julien, it was more of a mixed bag, with some truly brilliant and poor wines made.
