Médoc and Graves, 2014

The 2014 Bordeaux vintage produced classically styled reds with the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wines of the Left Bank fairing particularly well; generally being dense, concentrated and complex, with elegance and finesse to balance. Paulliac was quite excellent across the board and there is also real quality to be found in Margaux, Saint Estèphe, Pessac-Léognan and Saint-Julien.

The Bordeaux winter was very mild but wet and spring passed by without a late frost and the summer began well until a cold August meant that fruit struggled to ripen. An Indian summer saved the vintage, with the warmest September since the 1920s, which enabled perfect ripening, and the harvest took place in October in perfect conditions. Yields returned to average for most, which brought relief from a smaller 2013 crop.
