Bordeaux Satellites, 2011

2011 was an average to good Bordeaux vintage, following two excellent vintages in 2009 and 2010.

It was a tricky growing season across the region with early heat and drought, then heavy rains resulting in some uneven ripening, rot and consequently low yields. Generally, wines lacked alcohol and were high in tannins, but as ever, those producers with the skills, extra desire and/or financial resources made some good wines. Careful Fruit handling in the cellar was also crucial due to the high concentration and tannin – so as not to extract too much of either – and those of good practice made wines of freshness and elegance with cellar potential. 2011 will be defined as a mixed ‘winemaker’s’ vintage.

On the right bank, some producers from the Satellite appellations around Saint-Émilion and Pomerol struggled with the conditions, not having the manpower or financial resources to deal with the consequences. Quality is therefore variable and knowing your producers key.
