Estate Notes

Vega Sicilia is Ribera del Duero’s most legendary estate, and its wine, Unico, is the stuff that legends are made of – crafted from 45-year-old vines that spend a whopping 66 months in oak.

Since it was established in the 19th Century, Vega Sicilia has had five different owners who have benefited from the schist soils and the region’s high altitude (6- 700 metres) – where cool nights follow hot days to produce a long ripening season. The Alvarez family bought Vega Sicilia in 1982 (the year that the Ribera was made a Denominación de Origen), and the estate now comprises 250 hectares of vines.

Reviews

"...opening up with aeration to reveal forest floor, sandalwood and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with a simple, leather and mandarin-tinged entry...sedate, refined...

"The renowned Unico (produced from 80-100 year old vines) is one of the world's most distinctive, singular wines. Always released late, it is incredibly fresh, and capable of 2-3 more decades of evolution." eRobertParker.com
