Estate Notes

Tenuta delle Macchie's 2014 vintage is a super stylish, single vineyard Sangiovese from a tiny estate of just two hectares in the Tuscan hills. The estate is in the family of our customer’s favourite master Italian winemaker, Paolo Caciorgna, and when Paolo got the opportunity to make a wine for, and in honour of his family in the year 2000, the Macchie project was born.

Casole d’Elsa is an ancient hill town north of Siena. In contrast to the Chianti limestone hills, the soil here is volcanic, a terroir imparting a mineral spice to the wine which typically of Paolo’s approach inclines to elegance and subtle nuance, and beautifully illustrates his reputation among cognoscenti as the most skilful vinifier of Sangiovese, Tuscany’s noble vine. In his hands the variety achieves a finesse and delicacy more akin to Burgundy than the Bordeaux archetype.

Fine-toned ruby, and fresh, intense and floral aromas of refined spice and black fruits (black cherry and blackberry) with a good ripe core, a note of savoury leather, and mineral depth. Lovely purity, definition and fresh balance on the palate, with ripe concentration, perfectly integrated silky tannins, lifted floral spice in the savoury development, and long musky fruit, flowers and mineral spice in the finish. Delightful now, but should develop well for ten years in bottle.
