Tenuta delle Macchie's 2016 Alberaia is Paolo Caciorgna's gorgeously elegant Sangiovese from a tiny Tuscan vineyard in the locality of Casole d'Elsa. It was aged for 18 months in French oak.
The estate is in the family of our customer's favourite master Italian winemaker, Paolo Caciorgna, and when Paolo got the opportunity to make a wine for, and in honour of his family in the year 2000, the Macchie project was born. The term Alberaia refers to a row of trees.
Casole d'Elsa is an ancient hill town north of Siena. In contrast to the Chianti limestone hills, the soil here is volcanic, a terroir which imparts mineral spice to the wine which brings elegance and subtle nuances, and beautifully illustrates his reputation among cognoscenti as the most skilful vinifier of Sangiovese. In his hands the variety achieves a finesse and delicacy more akin to Burgundy than the Bordeaux archetype.
Limpid deep ruby. Gorgeous fresh rose-scented cherry and red fruits with delicate refined spice, bay leaf and smoky minerality. Deliciously elegant and balanced, focused on the front, broad and aromatic on the centre, medium bodied, with integrated aromatic tannins spreading into a long lightly macerated development and fresh long finish.
