Estate Notes

Southern Right's Sauvignon Blanc 2017 is a classy (and great value) South African Sauvignon Blanc from the makers of famed Hamilton Russell estate.

Named after the rare Southern Right whales from the bay nearby, this small, quality-led operation is now making big waves. Given the cool maritime location it is essentially Old World in style with lovely defined minerality and purity. And if you need any more reason to buy this benchmark wine, then it must be noted that for every bottle sold, the estate will donate to the conservation of the whales.

“Terrific notes of ripe grapefruit, lemon peel, and plenty of citrus emerge from this medium-bodied, vibrant, juicy and undeniably delicious white. I’d be thrilled to drink a bottle anytime over the coming year or two.” Jeb Dunnuck

"This attractive and well-balanced white leads with enticing notes of pressed lemon verbena, just-dried grass and fynbos that are framed by a fruity spine of Meyer lemon, melon rind and white nectarine. Orange-like, citrusy acidity weaves throughout the medium-weight palate, ending with verve and vibrancy." Wine Enthusiast

A nose more reminiscent of Northern Hemisphere / Old World Sauvignon, with green apple and gooseberry aromas and a slight ozone character (from its proximity to the ocean). Good green fruit attack with a pronounced steely, mineral style (saline) mid-palate; all nicely balanced with fresh acidity helping it through to a good finish.
