Estate Notes

Sandeman Vintage Port 1970 is in excellent condition for the year.

Sandeman was founded by Scotsman George Sandeman in 1790, and the family have remained involved ever since. Sandeman's motif is the famous 'Don' image, a Portuguese student's cape and hat, holding a glass of Port, created by George Massiot Brown in 1928.

Winter rainfall was slightly above average, followed by a very dry Spring and further rain in June. From July through to October in 1970 almost no rain fell and the harvest which started on 21st September was made under ideal conditions.

"The 1970 Sandeman Vintage Porto has a rather conservative bouquet, with notes of decayed red fruit, allspice, sandalwood and fennel, but those aromas feel rather constrained and straight-laced. Returning after several minutes, it finally begins to “motor” but is never totally convincing. The palate is better with supple, spicy red plums mixed with peppercorns and tobacco, a gentle honeyed texture and a light, focused finish that lingers in the mouth." Robert Parker

"Elegant and balanced, with lovely ripe fruit flavors, but it doesn't quite make it to the heights of other well-known shippers. Medium ruby-red, with a minty chocolate nose, medium-bodied, with cherry flavors, balanced tannins and a short finish." Wine Spectator
