Quinta do Noval's limited availability 2004 Nacional Vintage Port is only made in tiny quantities and was purchased in its original wooden case; and each bottle of the house's greatest port comes in its wooden presentation case. The Nacional is only made in the finest of Port vintages, and its exceptional quality and rarity make it, arguably, the world's most highly prized Port.
Quinta do Noval's Nacional Vintage Port is crafted from grapes yielding from a small plot of ungrafted vines at the heart of Noval vineyard, a great terroir planted with ungrafted vines; the cornerstone of this truly fine port. Grapes are trodden by foot in stone lagares (troughs) and the terroir gives it a distinct personality from Noval's Vintage Port.
Quinta do Noval is situated in the breathtakingly unspoilt and wild Douro Valley in northern Portugal: where vineyards cling to precipitously steep hillsides. It is the only Portuguese-owned house to have made its name to any great extent in the British and US port market.
"The 2004 Quinta do Noval Nacional has a show-stopping bouquet that is cut from a completely different cloth than the 2004 Vintage. This is far more extravagant and decadent, with kirsch, camphor, incense and crushed violets exploding from the glass. You might think it was some super Barossa Syrah if you nosed it blind. The palate is intense with penetrating, citrus-fresh black currant and dark-plum fruit. It is has lovely caressing, slightly grainy textured, well-judged acidity and a composed, elegant finish. This is pure class, a hedonistic Nacional surfeit with swagger and style." robertparker.com
