Estate Notes

Campfire's Navy Strength Gin botanicals are anchored to the Campfire London Dry Gin, with just a few tweaks and increased alcohol, which results in a bigger, bolder expression of this classic style. It won a Silver Medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (2018) and Winner of Gin of the Year, Navy category at Craft Distillers (2017).

Navy Strength gin was used by British Royal Navy, for whom it had to pass a potentially explosive proofing test; if gunpowder soaked in gin still burned it indicated that there was sufficient alcohol in the gin! Gin with less than 57% alcohol would prevent the gunpowder from igniting and be rejected by the Navy as it was not strong enough for their taste.

Campfire Gin is a multiple award-winning range crafted by Ben and Kate Marston at the Puddingstone Distillery (named after a rare, local rock formation in the Chiltern Hills). Each gin is only made in small batches from carefully selected botanicals, including rich rooibos, fresh orange, hazelnut and piney juniper, and is distilled using the finest UK wheat spirit.

The Puddingstone Distillery is situated near the attractive market town of Tring in Hertfordshire and surrounded by the outstanding beauty of the Chiltern Hills. In true distilling tradition Ben and Kate have named their stills. A 50-litre still called Isabella and a 200 litre still called Amelia, both named after two great adventurers – Isabella Lucy Bird and Amelia Earhart.

Reviews

Big, bold, but surprisingly smooth; based on Campfire's classic London Dry Gin recipe, with higher botanical loading to offset the higher strength. Perfect as it is, or try in a Red Admiral cocktail (25ml Campfire Navy Strength Gin, 20ml Port, 50ml Apple juice, clear, dash of orange bitters, thin slice of fresh ginger to garnish).

Silver Medal Winner at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (2018) and Winner of Gin of the Year, Navy category at Craft Distillers (2017).
