Château Haut-Bages Libéral

Château Haut Bages Libéral’s 29 hectares of prime Pauillac vines are owned by the Taillan Group, and while the estate (established in the 18th century) may lack the profile of other Pauillac greats, under the careful guidance of Claire Villars Lurton (granddaughter of Taillan director Jacques Merlaut) its fifth growth wines are some of the Médoc's most competitively priced: richly-textured and packed with ripe blackcurrant fruit (due to a high Cabernet Sauvignon content).

The Villars family took over Haut-Bages Libéral in the early 1980s and continued to invest heavily (as the Charreules Company had before them) in the vineyards and cellars, revolutionising what was previously an underperforming Bordeaux château.
