Estate Notes

Penfolds RWT 2011 comes in its original tissue wraps.

First released in 1997, Penfolds RWT (Red Winemaking Trial) Shiraz comes from the perfumed, richly textured, seductive Shiraz grown in the west of the Barossa Valley. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level.

Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak. Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive.

“A spicy, savoury, tangy and elegant variation on the RWT style, true to the season. It's led by firm, finely structured tannins and astringent acidity, underlined by dark chocolate French oak (51% new). There's gamey, peppery character here...a sound result for the '11 season.” James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion
