Estate Notes

Penfolds Grange 1996 was a stand out wine in a tricky vintage through rigorous selection of intensely flavoured grapes from mature vines. This produced a wine that far exceeded vintage expectations.

The Grange is one of Australia's finest and most famous wines, officially listed as a heritage icon of South Australia: a wine of extraordinary dimension and power. It has maintained its place as Australia's most prestigious red wine over four decades, and each vintage is eagerly awaited by collectors both in Australia and overseas.

"A massive wine, with cascades of potent plum, cherry and blackberry fruit swirling around wafts of black pepper, bay leaf and exotic spice, which last and last on the finish, hinting at smoky, meaty notes. It's all packed in tightly, suggesting this should evolve spectacularly with age!" Wine Spectator

"The wine is layered, unctuously textured, full-bodied with tremendous intensity, moderately high tannin, and a 40-second finish."
