Penfolds Cellar Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 is a very fine red wine and was purchased in its original cases.
Penfolds' Cellar Reserve range offers handcrafted, limited production wines. The Cellar Reserve label was established by Chief Winemaker, Peter Gago as: 'a range of alternative, limited release wines that explore the innovative boundaries of viticulture, vinification and style'.
Penfolds was founded by an English doctor, who migrated to South Australia in the mid-19th Century. Penfold had a firm belief in the medicinal value of port and sherry and began making fortified wine for his parents. This estate ethos continued until the 1950s when Jeffrey Penfold tasked winemaker Max Schubert to cater for changing consumer tastes.
"Deep garnet-purple in color and sporting a very forward and expressive, crème de cassis-led nose with hints of dried mint, dark chocolate and cigar boxes plus a whiff of dried herbs following, the full-bodied 2010 Cellar Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, concentrated and classic Barossa Cabernet style shaped by medium to firm, grainy tannins and crisp acid. It finishes very long." robertparker.com
"This is a no-holds-barred, super-ripe example of the Barossa, with fruitcake spice, liqueur soaked plums, toasty oak all on display; the palate is warm, rich, unctuous and pushing the ripeness envelope, but not so far as to be disastrous, as the tannins and acid bring the finish back in to line. A little time will be good, and if you are looking for weight over finesse, this may be the wine for you." James Halliday
