Estate Notes

Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 is a reflection of Grange: intensely-flavoured fruit, matured in new oak for 20 months, and a perfect expression of Penfolds' understanding of multi-vineyard, multi-region fruit sourcing. It was purchased in its original wooden case.

Bin 707 was named after the 707 Jumbo Jet by an ex-Qantas marketing man. It is only made with fruit that matches up to the required standard and quality, sourced from Coonawarra, the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Padthaway and is only produced when the quality is there, most recent examples being 2000, 2003 and 2011.

"A precise, correct and intense nose proffers florality, sandalwood and cassis. On the palate this is no less expressive, with a core of exquisitely sweet blackcurrant and blueberry fruit ably supported by charred meat, pan juice and mocha. Beautifully structured with a fine acidic structure and velvet, glossy tannins, this has a feeling of coiled and controlled power. Remarkably, it has spent 20 months in new American oak hogsheads but because the fruit is so flexed and glorious, the oak is barely perceptible. Superb." Decanter Magazine

Deep red and opaque to red rim. A nose of red berry fruit, pencil shavings, toast and freshly cut hay. On the palate it initially seems to be of a rather green extracted style, probably because of the American wood (100% for 20 months). However, the tannins smooth out to a soft almost grainy texture with flavours of blueberry, raisin, chocolate and teacake. This is an outstanding wine that needs a year or two to settle, but will provide excellent drinking for at least 20 years. David King
