Estate Notes

Penfold's Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 1998 is in very good condition for the year.

Penfold's Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon is a wonderful Australian Bordeaux-inspired red from the Barossa Valley, and was named after the 707 Jumbo Jet by an ex-Qantas marketing man.

Penfolds wine estate was founded by an English doctor (Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold), who migrated to South Australia in the mid-19th Century. Penfold had a firm belief in the medicinal value of port and sherry and began making fortified wine for his parents.

Penfold's ethos continued until the 1950s when Jeffrey Penfold tasked winemaker Max Schubert to cater for changing consumer tastes.

Almost single-handedly Schubert (who died in 1994) lifted Australia's wine industry out of mediocrity, and today Peter Gago is the esteemed winemaker in charge in the Barossa Valley.

Reviews

"The outstanding 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707 is a thick, rich, full-bodied Cabernet emphasizing copious quantities of cassis fruit. Pure, with nicely integrated oak, acidity, and tannin, it cuts a broad swath across the palate. While still young and grapy, this 1998 is loaded with potential." Robert Parker

"Captivating aromas of blackcurrant, lead pencil, tar, vanilla, mint and bourbon; the oak contributes an incense quality without overpowering the wine other aromatic components. Supple, juicy and intensely flavored, with bright, ripe acids framing the fruit and giving the wine lovely inner-mouth perfume. Lively and consistent from start to finish. Finishes very long, with ripe tannins and a note of bitter chocolate. A particularly strong vintage for this wine." Stephen Tanzer
