Estate Notes

Penfolds, Bin 51 Riesling 2018 is a world-class Riesling, with fresh, lime cordial zest, wonderful finesse and elegance from the Valley’s cool climate and high altitude vines, with a capacity for short-medium term cellaring.

The origins of the Penfolds estate are set firmly in the medical sphere, and its reputation built up over the course of the 19th century based on the production of wines (often fortified) which were prescribed to patients by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold who had settled in South Australia from Brighton in 1844.

From the 1940s onwards the focus shifted in favour of producing table wines, and in 1951 the legendary chief winemaker Max Schubert began experimenting with the idea of making a long-lived red wine called Grange. The rest, as they say, is history.

“Since 1999, Penfolds has been making Riesling from High Eden vines over 60 years old. From a warm but exceptional vintage, the enticingly fresh, lime-dominant floral aromatics are accompanied by a refreshing spritz on the palate. Medium-bodied limey fruit has a crunchy apple bite for an appetisingly crisp, dry finish. One for ceviche and shellfish.” Decanter Magazine

“Crushed stone and wet moss give it a firm grounding in the earth as well. Crisp, lean and long, it shimmers with positive sunshine and energy, vibrant and lingering on the finish.”
