Estate Notes

Penfolds Bin 169 2009 is a pure expression of fruit from the Coonawarra, which is synonymous with Australia's greatest Cabernets, the 2016 vintage was aged for 13 months in fine-grained French oak.

The origins of the Penfolds estate are set firmly in the medical sphere, and its reputation built up over the course of the 19th century based on the production of wines (often fortified) which were prescribed to patients by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold who had settled in South Australia from Brighton in 1844.

From the 1940s onwards the focus shifted in favour of producing table wines, and in 1951 the legendary chief winemaker Max Schubert began experimenting with the idea of making a long-lived red wine called Grange. The rest, as they say, is history.

“…full-bodied and richly concentrated, with flavours of red berry and cassis… pristine, finely textured richness complemented by distinct cooler climate Coonawarra elegance in a very sleek and juicy mould. Drink with Lamb cutlets or roast guinea fowl.” Anthony Rose, Decanter

“…floral yet dense and concentrated. Full-bodied and rich on the palate, it exudes class and balance at the same time. It's a super expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from one of Australia's premier regions for the grape variety, ending on lingering notes of cocoa, cassis and pencil shavings.”
