Estate Notes

Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz 2016 is a lovely deep, soft, complex Shiraz style from fruit grown on the unique terra rossa soils of Coonawarra; a region that exemplifies the elegant and seductive nature of cool-climate Shiraz.

Coonawarra has remained the source of Shiraz fruit for the Bin 128 since the inaugural release of the 1962 vintage. In order to further enhance the regional qualities of Bin 128, the wine is matured in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads; a method that was refined during the 1980s when the transition was made from American to French oak, suiting this lovely cool-climate style.

“…rich and spicy aromas of sweet camphor and pepper show a hint of telltale smoky oak…coolish-climate-derived flavours are also markedly spicy…opulently textured, with a firm hand of quite grippy tannins nicely balanced by savoury acidity that makes it delicious to drink imminently, albeit with a long life assured. A red for roast pheasant or chicken.” Decanter Magazine

“…red-fruited and bright, with raspberries and cherries couched in supple layers of French oak. Caramel and mocha shadings add richness and depth, with dry cedary-savory notes on the finish.”
