Estate Notes

Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz 2015 is a lovely deep, soft, complex Shiraz style from fruit grown on the unique terra rossa soils of Coonawarra; a region that exemplifies the elegant and seductive nature of cool-climate Shiraz.

Coonawarra has remained the source of Shiraz fruit for the Bin 128 since the inaugural release of the 1962 vintage. In order to further enhance the regional qualities of Bin 128, the wine is matured in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads; a method that was refined during the 1980s when the transition was made from American to French oak, suiting this lovely cool-climate style.

"Pure, classic cool-climate terra rossa Coonawarra fruit goes into the Bin128, which has been produced since 1962. Up to the 1980s it was matured in American oak, but now it is all French oak hogsheads - 30% new, 30% one year old and 40% two year old - giving the wine a subtle cedary sheen on the palate. The fruit here is sweet bramble and black cherry with ink, leather and tobacco. There's a lovely lifted acidity and ripe, grainy tannins that frame the fruit. Very classy and pure.” Decanter Magazine

Deep mauve colour. On the nose there’s an obvious meaty character here (think of juices from the Sunday roast beef), charred wood and spicy, savoury notes. On the palate we find ripe dark plum fruit and sweet dates, velvety tannins a defined mineral character. Deep, full-bodied with excellent balance and length. David King
