Estate Notes

Pegasus Bay's Riesling is a premium single varietal from New Zealand's Waipara Valley, where   warm days and cool nights yield perfectly ripe, rich fruit while retaining a wonderful knife-edge acidity.

Pegasus Bay is a family-run winery, one of Canterbury’s top estates and rated in New Zealand’s Top 5 producers by Robert Parker. The Donaldson family have been seriously involved in wine since the early 1970s and were pioneers of local grape growing and wine making.

Associate Professor and Consultant Neurologist, Ivan Donaldson, is a wine writer and wine judge and oveersees viticulture and wine styles, his wife, Christine, runs the winery's grounds, while their eldest son, Matthew is the winemaker. Another son, Edward Donaldson, is Marketing Manager while, Paul Donaldson, the youngest son is the General Manager.

Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

“Rich and dripping with honey-scented notes of peach, dried pineapple and apple cider, accented by hints of toasted spice, floral and orange marmalade. Despite the smooth, rich texture, this has a very crisp and refreshing finish.” Wine Spectator

"The Donaldson family initially planted vines at this Waipara estate in 1986, at first with a whole fruit salad of vines including a mix of Bordeaux varietals. With the benefit of trial and error, now the focus at Pegasus Bay is on Riesling and Pinot Noir. Husband and wife team, Lynnette Hudson and Matt Donaldson, are the dynamic duo heading-up winemaking these days and, as the notes of the verticals of back vintages I tasted with them will attest, the wines from this commendable estate not only have staying power, they just get better and better."

"Pegasus Bay is Canterbury's top winery." Michael Cooper, Wine Atlas of New Zealand

“These wines deserved my time. When I returned to the UK, I frequently ended up in conversation with fellow wine writers about New Zealand wine and whenever their name cropped up, there was always consensus that this was one of the country’s most exciting producers.” Neal Martin,
