Estate Notes

Shunning the highly extracted and more full-throttle style of certain Brunellos, the wines at La Madonna Nera have been made to express the potential for elegance and finesse that makes Brunello di Montalcino the most esteemed of Tuscan reds.

The zone of Montalcino known as La Madonna lies on the south-eastern slope below the medieval town in the heart of the appellation. The 4 hectare vineyard was bought by the Borgogni family in 2006 on the advice of celebrated oenologist Carlo Ferrini, under whose supervision the wines have been made until recently (Ferrini is now concentrating entirely on his own wine property nearby). A new cellar was built into the hillside on ecological principles, where the wines could be worked by gravity with the minimum of pumping. French oak barrels of 500 to 700 litres are used for an elevage of 30 months, providing a happy medium between the traditional larger botte (casks) and the smaller 225 litre barriques that have become fashionable. Esteemed consultant winemaker, Paolo Caciorgna, was a natural choice to succeed Ferrini as oenologist here.

“The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna Nera plays out the vintage characteristics with textbook precision. In appearance, it shows a dark ruby and garnet color. The bouquet delivers a medley of dried cassis and berry aromas with spice, tobacco and cola. The wine delivers moderate intensity on the nose and in the mouth, where integrated tannins segue to crisp freshness. This Brunello represents the cool vintage nicely.”

"Clean and refined, this multilayered Brunello boasts very good sugar-acid-tannin balance and an austere, penetrating mouthfeel. Finishes long and piercingly floral. I find the flinty note to be typical of Madonna Nera’s Brunellos in almost every vintage.” Ian D’Agata

The 2013 vintage has fine clear medium-deep garnet tints, and lifted aromas of refined spice and old rose florality with a centre of delicate ripe red and stoned fruits, and notes of sweet leather and chocolate beneath, supported by a mineral base. The palate has lovely focus and balance with mineral freshness and depth throughout; a fine spread of fruit on the front and centre envelops silky tannins, followed by a spicy and savoury development, and aromatic floral red fruits in the long finish.
