Estate Notes

The Les Hauts de Smith Blanc 2010 is pure Sauvignon Blanc matured in 50% new oak and was purchased in its original wooden case. It is not the second wine of Smith-Haut-Lafitte, but rather a unique and individual label in its own right.

2010 was another great Bordeaux vintage, following on from the sensational 2009 vintage, and it may well end up the equal of (if not surpassing) both 2005 and 2009 – with so many wines showing a perfect balance of fruit, tannins, acidity and alcohol. Smith Haut Lafitte has gone from nigh on the bottom of the class to the very top in a matter of a decade. It offers scintillating quality and fantastic value-for-money from a left bank château, and its wines (and owners) are some of the most charming in all Bordeaux.

Smith Haut Lafitte is owned by the amiable ex-Olympic skier Daniel Cathiard and his wife Florence, who have transformed the property and the quality of the wines beyond recognition since 1990. Smith-Haut-Lafitte is not classified as organic, but its practices are very much in the natural vein. They make their own organic compost and oak barrels.
