Estate Notes

Le Fonti’s 2015 is a great entry-level Chianti Classico, which consistently punches above its weight and price with every vintage our experts taste.

This popular Chianti is made by one of our favourite consultant winemakers, Paolo Caciorgna, and comes at a knockout price. It is noticeably warmer here than other Chianti areas, the berries ripen earlier and the wines are often referred to as being Pomerol-like.

Le Fonti was bought in the mid 1950s by the Imberti family and the current owners, Franca and Ferdinando also manage a business in Milan but actively follow the work at the estate. They have invested heavily and replanted solely with Sangiovese in the 1990s, and in their search for excellence they appointed young agronomist, Lorenzo Bernini and, of course, the famed and talented oenologist Paolo Caciorgna.

“The 2015 Chianti Classico shows a ripe and sweet quality of fruit with jammy notes of blackberry preserves and cherry confit. Those fruit tones are thick and lavishly layered, reflecting this sunny and warm vintage. The wine is soft and velvety in texture and promises to deliver its best results when consumed young (when that primary fruit is still intact). This Chianti Classico is composed of 90% Sangiovese with 9% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon (all aged in neutral French barrique for 12 months).”
