Estate Notes

La Monacesca's Terra di Mezzo 2012 Verdicchio is only produced in superior vintages - a breathtakingly concentrated, rich and elegant white, crafted from small lots of vines by the father and son team Casimiro and Aldo in the stunning Appennine hills. Aged for five years before release, which adds to the complexity, this level of maturity and quality is rarely seen in Italian whites.

La Monacesca (lit. Monastery), which is situated in the township of Matelica in the Marche region of central Italy, dates back to 900 AD, when a group of Benedictine monks fled persecution to the Apennine hills to practice viticulture. In the 1960s Casimiro Cifola set about unlocking the mountainside's potential and raising its international profile. While less well-known than its famous seaside sibling Castelli di Jesi, both Casimiro and Aldo have been at the forefront of Verdicchio's quality renaissance in Matelica. Their Verdicchios compete with Italy’s finest whites: complex and concentrated, yet elegant and refined, our customers have been saying this since the 2001 vintage.

"A rich and oily white with sliced dried apples and pineapple. Full-bodied, oily and intense. A mature and delicious white." James Suckling
