Estate Notes

Monacesca's Mirum is one of the finest Italian white wines on the market from an estate that is now widely regarded as one of the best white wine producing estates in the whole of Italy.

Father and son Casimiro and Aldo have been tending Monacesca’s low yielding, late harvest, old vines from an ancient monastery in the stunning Appennine Hills since the 1960s and their Verdicchios compete with Italy’s finest whites. Here, the combination of hot days and cool nights encourages high levels of both acidity and alcohol. Given a dry autumn Verdicchio can reach optimal phenolic maturity which, when combined with the high acidity, provides all the ingredients necessary for ageing. While less well-known than its famous seaside sibling Castelli di Jesi, both Casimiro and Aldo have been at the forefront of Verdicchio's quality renaissance in Matelica.

La Monacesca (lit. Monastery), dates back to 900 AD, when a group of Benedictine monks fled persecution to the Apennine hills to practice viticulture.

Full bodied and intense aromatic nose with toasted almonds, bready notes, citrus and honey. Rich and complex in the mouth, with exotic fruits, citrus and pear, balanced by lovely saline, stone minerality and vibrancy that flows on to a seemingly endless finish.

"La Monacesca, one of the best producers of Verdicchio wines, takes its name from the Benedictine monks who arrived in the area of Matelica in the 10th century, building a monastery (monaco, or monk in English, hence La Monacesca). The estate was founded in 1966, and the passionate Aldo Cifola now runs the estate’s roughly 30 hectares. Through the years, La Monacesca has produced some of Italy’s greatest white wines, especially the Riserva Mirum, which boasts texture and precision not unlike that of a grand cru white Burgundy.” Antonio Galloni

"With its extraordinary interpretation of the Matelica DOC, Aldo Cifola's winery is the perfect exponent of the concept of terroir." Gambero Rosso
