Estate Notes

Jean Grivot Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2012 was purchased in its original case.

Jean Grivot's exceptionally pure, elegant Pinot Noirs are consistently poised at the pinnacle of premium Burgundy.

Grivot's 10 hectares of vineyards in Vosne-Romanée are managed by Étienne and his wife Marielle Grivot – the fifth generation of Grivots to run this elite Burgundy estate.

Since Étienne took over from his father in 1990 he has traded lesser quality vineyards for more prestigious parcels within Burgundy's best sites, including Clos de Vougeot, and his holdings now cover a staggering 15 different appellations! Étienne practices a gentle and non-intrusive Burgundian winemaking style, believing that dense planting for small crops fully expresses the character of his full, rich Pinot Noir fruit.

“a fine bouquet with ebullient red cherry and raspberry fruit, plenty of wild strawberry and white pepper notes. It is sophisticated and very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe red fruit laced with soy and Provençal herbs, even a suggestion of fennel, fanning out gently on the finish to complete a very satisfying Clos de Vougeot. No surprise when I discovered the identity of the grower.”

“Hints of smoke and mineral ignite the black currant, black cherry and violet flavors in this dense yet pure and elegant red. Stays long and complex on the finish...” Wine Spectator

“Reticent but pure aromas of raspberry and crushed rock. Silky and sappy on entry, then suave and sharply delineated in the middle, conveying an impression of vigor to its perfumed flavors of dark fruits, minerals and noble herbs. Perfectly integrated ripe acidity contributes finesse. This very sophisticated Clos Vougeot delivers a compelling combination of gras and vibrancy. Really stains the palate and echoes on the aftertaste, with the firm tannins buried in fruit. A beauty.” Stephen Tanzer
