Estate Notes

Istvan Szepsy's Tokaji Esszencia 1999 is a rare and exceptional Tokaji - an incredibly thick, rich, opulent sweet wine with deep citrus/orange fruit and some spice.

Esszencia is the richest and rarest of all Hungarian Tokaji wines and typically, this free run juice takes 6-8 years to complete its fermentation to less than 3% alcohol.

Istvan Szepsy is one of Tokaji's finest winemakers, who has made Tokaji through Hungary's Communist era in a cooperative and his own artisan winery. He was a founding member of Royal Tokaji and then went on to launch Királyudvar with Anthony Hwang of the Loire’s Domaine Huet where he began an ambitious experiment with dry furmint.

Today, Istvan manages his own vineyards with an eye toward making dry wines, whilst also dedicated to the traditional sweet wines of the Tokaji region.

"Weighing in at a huge 2.8% this motor-oil thick golden fluid packs incredible sweetness. Very young, this is going to need a couple of decades to broaden out and mellow at the moment it's extremely impressive, endlessly deep and quite possiblythe sweetest thing you will ever drink." (2009 Bordeaux En Primeur Tasting, London)

"ummm yeah.. well it just bottled so its less than imposible to judge. also we are talking 600 RS, 3% alc...and yet its clean clear and dont ask me. like in the previous wine - the oak shows. spices and orages/lemons, sweet sucking candy, amazingly pure... WOW. 96 points."

"A wine of truthful monumental density, sweetness and oppulence of extracts, certainly the greatest Hungarian wine since 1945 or even longer!" Mario Scheuermann (
