Estate Notes

Fritz Haag's Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese was purchased in its original case.

The historic Fritz Haag wine estate is located in the heart of the central Mosel River Valley, and dates back to 1605. It is situated in the village of Brauneberg (lit. brown mountain), which refers to the colour of the slate soil in this area of the Mosel, and the grapes for the 2001 Auslese yield from the world-renowned vineyard Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr.

Fritz Haag was headed by the energetic Wilhelm Haag for many years and the 17.5 hectares is now impeccably run by his son Oliver, who makes the most of his excellent micro-climate and the deep slate soils of the Brauneberger Juffer slope which form the basis for some of the most intensely flavored and elegantly-structured Riesling wines of the entire Mosel.

Reviews

"Candied stones and liquid minerals are intermingled with honeysuckle blossoms in the aromatics of the 2001 Riesling Auslese Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr. This stunner is elegant beyond words, powerful, crystalline, and has a mind-boggling finish. Its light to medium-bodied, satin-textured personality is boldly flavored yet airy. Quartz, assorted minerals, verbena, and hints of candied limes are found in this complete offering's complex character." eRobertParker.com

"A sleek white, packed with slate and spice notes on a rich, lightweight frame. The texture picks up a creaminess, and the aftertaste evokes vanilla custard and slate." Wine Spectator
