Frederic Esmonin's Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru 2013 comes from a tiny parcel of 40-plus-year-old vines, and is a complex, powerful style of red Burgundy. It was purchased in its original case.

Gevrey-Chambertin is one of the largest and most famous red wine producing villages in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits district, based on the Pinot Noir grape.

At the top end of Gevrey-Chambertin are nine grand crus, including Mazy-Chambertin. The best premier crus include Clos Saint-Jacques and Les Cazetiers, and below this are the generic appellations of Gevrey-Chambertin and then the Côte de Nuits.

"Bright, deep red. Sexy, distinctively wild nose combines black raspberry, violet and game, all lifted by a peppery topnote. Then broad, sweet and thick in the mouth; in fact, a bit coarse in texture today compared to the stylish Estournelles Saint-Jacques. Seriously tannic and backward in the context of this collection."
