Estate Notes

Flaccianello della Pieve is Fontodi’s ‘Super-Tuscan’, and one of the first such 100% Sangiovese wines. The 2003 vintage was purchased in its original wooden case.

The key to Fontodi’s success, under Giovanni Manetti and Franco Bernabei, is the amazing quality of its fruit, producing modern, stylish wines, yet with a sense of tradition - combining the best of both worlds - with wonderful poise, balance and concentration.

One of the classic Super Tuscans, Flaccianello is the emblem of grip and elegance at the same time. Grip because it is well-sustained by acidity, which also renders it long-lived. Elegance because it is difficult to find a wine so aristocratic, almost sulky.

"The 2003 Flaccianello della Pieve has aged well considering the oppressive heat of the year. This is a decidedly huge, opulent Flaccianello...This complete vertical of Fontodi’s flagship 100% Sangiovese Flaccianello was yet another of the remarkable tastings of my recent trip to Tuscany. Flaccianello is an interesting wine because the quality level that is the norm today only really starts around 2001." Antonio Galloni
