La Monacesca's 2019 entry-level Verdicchio di Matelica is one of Italy's finest white wines at a remarkable price.
Father and son Casimiro and Aldo have been tending Monacesca's low yielding, late harvest, old vines from an ancient monastery in the stunning Apennine Hills since the 1960s and their Verdicchios compete with Italy's finest whites: complex and concentrated, yet elegant and refined, our customers have been saying this since the 2001 vintage.
La Monacesca, which is situated in the township of Matelica in the Marche region of central Italy, dates back to 900 AD, when a group of Benedictine monks fled persecution to the Apennine hills to practice viticulture. In the 1960s Casimiro Cifola set about unlocking the mountainside's potential and raising its international profile. While less well-known than its famous seaside sibling Castelli di Jesi, both Casimiro and Aldo have been at the forefront of Verdicchio's quality renaissance in Matelica.
Complex, intense notes of anise, Amalfi lemon, honey, dried stone fruits and baked bread on the nose. Powerful and rich in the mouth, balanced with fresh, taut, vibrant minerality redolent of the soil and high altitude vines.
