Monacesca's Mirum consistently wins top marks from Italy's most prestigious reviewer, Gambero Rosso.
Monacesca's Mirum is one of the finest Italian white wines on the market from an estate that is now widely regarded as one of the finest white wine producing estates not just in Marche, but the whole of Italy. The combination of hot days and cool nights encourages high levels of both acidity and alcohol. Given a dry autumn Verdicchio can reach optimal phenolic maturity which, when combined with the high acidity, provides all the ingredients necessary for ageing.
La Monacesca dates back to 900 AD when Benedictine monks fled persecution to the Apennine hills to practice viticulture. In the 1960s Casimiro Cifola set about unlocking the mountainside's potential and began planting Verdicchio in mineral-rich soils. Casimiro and his son Aldo have been at the forefront of Verdicchio's quality renaissance ever since.
"The 2018 Verdicchio di Matelica Mirum Riserva is youthfully poised and takes some time to open up in the glass. With coaxing, a pretty display forms, showing dusty white flowers, smoke, hints of almond, lemon and lime zests. It’s a deeply textural wine, silky yet not weighty, and decidedly spicy in character, flaunting its salty minerality and vibrant acids, while balancing the expression with ripe orchard fruits. Tension remains high through the structured finale, with notes of ginger-laced apple, orange and just a hint of vanilla bean. This is a gorgeous Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva, and it’s packed full of potential." Eric Guido, Vinous
