La Monacesca's 2017 Mirum was awarded 2 Bicchieri by Gambero Rosso.
Monacesca's Mirum is one of the finest Italian white wines on the market from an estate that is now widely regarded as one of the best white wine producing estates in the whole of Italy.
La Monacesca, which is situated in the township of Matelica in the Marche region of central Italy, dates back to 900 AD, when a group of Benedictine monks fled persecution to the Apennine hills to practice viticulture. In the 1960s Casimiro Cifola set about unlocking the mountainside's potential and raising its international profile. While less well-known than its famous seaside sibling Castelli di Jesi, both Casimiro and Aldo have been at the forefront of Verdicchio's quality renaissance in Matelica. Their Verdicchios compete with Italy's finest white wines: complex and concentrated, yet elegant and refined, our customers have been saying this since the 2001 vintage.
Straw yellow in colour; intense and complex aromatics of both fruit and flower with pear, kumquat, chamomile, bergamot overlaying a ripe, honeyed, toasted almond core, and a delightful wet stone minerality; on the palate this is added to by a hint of brioche and vanilla, with a lovely salinity to counterbalance the richness and layers of flavours. This has the balance and pedigree to age beautifully for a few years. (Similar food matches to straight Verdicchio, though the added richness and depth make it a better match for white meats in sauces.)
