Estate Notes

Domaine de Chevalier produced a stunning wine in the great 2000 Bordeaux vintage and was purchased in its original wooden case.

Chevalier is owned by the Bernard family and its recent success can be attributed to Olivier Bernard who instigated an extensive replanting program from 1988 to 1995 and oversaw the construction of new winemaking facilities including a modern vat room, which has since been updated in 2014.

Domaine de Chevalier has a wonderfully unique and complex terroir comprising 40 hectares of vines on gravel and black sand with a sub-soil of a clay and gravel. The estate produces both red and white Bordeaux using sustainable methods, including organic fertilizers. Grapes are vinified in parcels and a third of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels and aged for 18-22 months.

“Medium-deep ruby-red. Enticing aromas of redcurrant, plum, violet, minerals and graphite complemented by sexy oak spices. Broad, lush and sweet, with a pristine quality to the perfumed flavors of red berries, black cherry and spices. Harmonious acidity gives the wine shape and balance and a very clean, fresh mouthfeel. Finishes impressively broad and horizontal, with smooth, ripe tannins and lingering spicy perfume. This sophisticated, glossy wine is still remarkably young and lively.” Ian d'Agata
